Mark D.
Rothman
President and
Founder, MYTA Corporation
MYTA
president and founder Mark Rothman attributes his success to humble
beginnings and a good work ethic. Born
and raised in the blue-collar industrial city of Toledo, Ohio, Mark was
raised in a family long on hard work but
short on money. Mark’s
parents MYron and niTA, for whom his corporation is named, never owned a
home, but always provided their children with a loving environment and
encouraged Mark, as well as his brother and sister, to work hard and achieve
their dreams.
After
graduating with an engineering degree from The Ohio State University in
1984, Mark moved to Washington, D.C. to pursue the area’s many technology
opportunities. Over the next
eight years, Mark worked as a software engineer for technology giants IBM
and MCI. While at IBM, he
helped design, pitch and implement system upgrades for the FAA’s air
traffic control system. Today,
the “story board” for this project is proudly displayed on a wall in his
office.
Although
happy with his career, Mark wanted to push the envelope and take his
technology and business skills to the next level.
Working in the IT industry, Mark saw the need for qualified IT
specialists in the D.C. region and decided to start his own consulting
company. In 1992, using the
second bedroom in his apartment as an office, Mark made cold calls to area
companies and landed his first contract
His business took off from there.
The
MYTA Corporation is now one of the D.C. area’s premier information
technology staffing firms,
assisting some of the region’s largest companies including: WorldCom,
Verizon, Lockheed Martin, Cable & Wireless, AT&T, and The Discovery
Channel . MYTA is a $25 million firm with a growth rate averaging more
than 100 percent per year. Ranked
as one of the top 10 IT staffing firms by the Washington Business Journal
and included in INC. Magazine’s
INC 500, MYTA hit its 100th contractor mark in 1998 and its 200th contractor
mark in 2000.
Mark
considers his employees to be the key factors in driving MYTA’s success.
He realizes that superior client service is only possible with the
right employees and consultants. Employee
retention is extremely important to Mark and he strives to create a
stimulating working environment where employees are not only encouraged to
do their best, but also have fun. By
implementing these best practices, MYTA was able to avert lay-offs to its
internal staff during the recession of 2001.
Mark
is an active member of the area business community and is involved with
numerous organizations including: the Northern Virginia Technology Council,
the Washington Board of Trade, the D.C. Chamber of Commerce and the National
Association of Computer Consultant Businesses.
He has been named a Maryland Small Business All Star and has won the
prestigious Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award. Mark is also a dedicated philanthropist and has affiliations
with numerous charitable organizations including Help the Homeless, the
Leukemia Society, the Kennedy Center and Hoop Dreams.
In
his spare time, Mark likes to explore the Chesapeake Bay on his boat with his Golden Retriever, Buca.
He is also an avid sports fan and enjoys watching D.C.’s new local
hero, Michael Jordan, from his second row seats at the Wizards’ home
games. Mark boasts a one-on-one
encounter with Jordan while playing ball at the NBA star’s “Flight
School” last summer in Las Vegas. Refusing
to boast, however, Mark refuses to divulge the game’s winner.
